The election of Jair Bolsonaro in October 2018 shed light on the role of religion in Brazilian politics. With the slogan “Brazil above everything, God above everyone”, Bolsonaro leaded an electoral campaign sustained by a broad coalition formed by heterogeneous conservative, religious and right-wing groups, some of them clearly supporting authoritarian agendas. Using an aggressive political rhetoric based on hate speech towards blacks, indigenous people, women and LGBTQI, Bolsonaro presented himself as the defender of traditional Christian moral values, gaining enthusiastic support from leaderships of Brazilian two biggest Pentecostal denominations (Assembly of God - AD and the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God - UCKG), as well as from some members of the Catholic Church.
